| As well as being a poet, Gerard Manley Hopkins was a gifted artist.
His family encouraged all creative pursuits and the children drew,
painted, played music and created dramas for the entertainment of
other family members. He retained a lifelong interest in the arts
and had a great appreciation of painting, architecture, literature
and music. His brother Arthur earned his living as an artist and
drew for The London Illustrated News. Many of G.M.H.'s surviving
sketches were produced while on holiday with his brother. Gerard's
letters are full of fascinating comments on matters of artistic
and literary taste that demonstrate the liveliness of his mind and
the quality of his appreciation. His drawings and letters are well
worth considering as a part of his legacy and as a background to
the poems and to that end a small selection from his sketchbooks
is included here. |
